Summer is here! Sun, warmth, long days/evenings; we all wait a long time to enjoy these next upcoming months. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I plan to. Please ensure to keep your immune system running well and manage your stress levels continuously. Research shows that when we are stressed, our immune resilience is lowered so managing our stress levels is an important factor in keeping our immune systems strong. Especially during these past few months when Covid has impacted us all and taken a toll on our bodies, it is important more than ever to continue to keep our immune systems running effectively and efficiently. As phase 3 has opened up a lot more businesses and people are out and about more now, we need continue to follow safety rules and protocols with social distancing, washing your hands frequently, wearing a mask when applicable and as well, the following will greatly increase your immune resilience:

1) Eat foods that strengthen your immune system.

We all want to enjoy ourselves and indulge a little this summer. Use the following list and try to eat 70% of the time from the first column. If you are auto immune compromised or in the fall when our resilience starts to decrease, focus on the first column 80% of the time:

FOODS THAT PROMOTE IMMUNITY

  • Leafy greens, fresh herbs
  • Whole grains
  • Lean protein
  • All fruits (especially those high in Vit C)
  • All vegetables (especially those high in Vit C)
  • Herbal teas; freshly pressed juice
  • Grass fed butter, olive oil, avocado oil
  • Dark organic chocolate; unprocessed treats with stevia, honey or pure maple syrup

FOODS THAT COMPROMISE IMMUNITY

  • Over consumption of sugar
  • Over consumption of alcohol
  • Processed foods (fried fast food, starchy carbs)
  • Over consumption of processed bread and baked goods
  • Conventional fatty meat
  • Pop, processed juices
  • Margarine and processed cooking oils
  • Conventional candy and chocolate using coloring, flavoring and additives

2) Manage Your Stress

There are many ways we can manage our stress even with something as simple as a walk in the park or by the beach. Sometimes our bodies require a deeper healing experience, especially if you are having trouble sleeping, suffering chronic pain, sustaining injuries or just mentally and/or emotionally drained. There are many modalities available to help you manage your stress, pain and fatigue and we offer a number of these at Salt. These include, massage therapy, floatation therapy is excellent for resetting your nervous system, non-conventional chiropractic treatment, infrared sauna and dry salt therapy. Any modality that works for you to relieve any type of stress your body is experiencing will be helpful and beneficial to your immune system.

3) Dry Salt Therapy

Our unique dry salt therapy is an excellent way to boost your immune system. The fine salt particles dispersed in our Salt Room and Salt Bed Chamber are absorbed via the lungs and skin providing a therapeutic and healing effect to the lungs and the skin. As the antimicrobial and antiviral properties of the salt clean up allergens, toxins, debris, foreign bacteria etc, this takes a load off of the body’s wear and tear and can assist with quicker healing and recovery from a myriad of ailments as well as keep your immune system strong and resilient.

4) Exercise

Research also shows that exercise helps strengthen an immune system. Even a little bit is better than nothing at all and a simple walk each day is great start. Work your way up to half hour per day if that is your only form of exercise. If you are too unwell to exercise or can’t get out walking, infrared saunas are another great option way to boost your immune system and your circulation. A 30 min session is equivalent to a 30 min cardio session as the blood circulation increases and your body is working hard to detoxify at the cellular level. The heat and infrared technology encourage antibacterial and antiviral activity in the body by stimulating white cell production. This therapy also speeds up the healing of injuries as it is anti-inflammator

5) Natural Health Products

If your diet is not up to par, it can be a good idea to supplement with a quality multivitamin. I also always recommend taking a good probiotic which is extremely important especially if you have been taking antibiotics. Vitamin D is a big one as well and it has been shown to prevent many illnesses and ailments. We may need less in the summer but we still need some to keep up our immunity. If you aren’t taking a multivitamin, consider taking vitamin D and vitamin C to keep your immune system up with the current times. If you do get sick or simply want to keep your defenses up closer to the beginning of fall when people start to experience colds and flus, you can also use specific vitamins and herbal remedies such as oil of oregano, zinc, olive leaf, echinacea, astragalus and a host of others including specific blends that any health food store can help you with. If you are taking certain medications or have never used an herbal immune supplement before, check with your health practitioner for suggestions. We are all unique and what might work for one individual won’t necessarily work for another.
