Registered acupuncture

What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional therapy rooted in East Asian medicine that stimulates specific points on the body to support natural healing, regulate body systems, and restore balance.

At our clinic, acupuncture is often combined with osteopathic techniques to provide a more comprehensive and integrative approach to care.

What Can Acupuncture Help With

Acupuncture may support a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Neck, back, and shoulder pain
  • Sciatica and  nerve-related conditions
  • ICBC (motor vehicle accident) injuries
  • Stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders
  • Digestive and internal conditions
  • Hormonal and women’s health

Treatment focuses on improving function, reducing discomfort, and supporting overall well-being.

Song has a quite gentle and minimal approach, typically using fewer than 10 very fine needles, mainly on the hands, feet, and below the knees (five shu points).

Frequently Asked Questions

Supportive Therapies

Acupuncture primarily involves the use of very fine, single-use sterile needles, often much thinner than those used for injections. Most patients find the treatment comfortable and well tolerated.

At our clinic, we emphasize a gentle and minimally painful approach, making acupuncture suitable even for patients who are sensitive or new to treatment.

For those who prefer a non-invasive option, we also offer:

  • Laser acupuncture – a needle-free method using low-level laser to stimulate acupuncture points

  • Needle-free techniques – gentle alternatives designed to activate acupuncture channels without skin penetration

This allows patients to choose a treatment style that best matches their comfort level.

To enhance treatment outcomes, acupuncture may be combined with additional supportive therapies, including:

Percussive therapy (handheld device) – to relieve muscle tension and improve mobility

Herbal inhalation therapy (TCM-based vapor therapy) – a gentle, non-invasive approach using herbal vapor to support respiratory function, sinus comfort, and overall system regulation

Herbal Inhalation Therapy

This (TCM-Based Vapor Therapy) is a gentle, non-invasive therapy using herbal vapor inhalation to support respiratory comfort, sinus function, and overall system regulation.

Patients inhale a mild herbal vapor through a nasal tube for approximately 30 minutes.

You can expect a light herbal aroma (generally well tolerated) and a comfortable, relaxing experience. This therapy may support sinus congestion, nasal discomfort, seasonal sensitivities, and overall balance.

It may be used on its own or as a complementary therapy alongside acupuncture or osteopathic treatment, depending on patient needs.

Add-on Pricing & Use

First-time trial add-on to acupuncture is $10, and subsequent add-on fee is $20. There is no add-on fee when combined with an osteopathy treatment.

Please inform the front desk at check-in if you would like to add this option, as add-ons are not available for online booking.

In practice, inhalation therapy will mainly be used as a supportive add-on. If additional treatment is needed during the session, it can be naturally combined or transitioned into acupuncture or osteopathic treatment based on the patient’s condition.

Yes, the scientific evidence supports many of the benefits of acupuncture, though research is ongoing and some aspects remain debated. Below are some key findings from studies that back acupuncture’s effectiveness in certain areas:

1. Pain Relief

Numerous studies have shown that acupuncture can be effective in reducing chronic pain, particularly for conditions such as:

  • Lower back pain: Research published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that acupuncture provided significant pain relief for people with chronic lower back pain.
  • Osteoarthritis: A 2014 meta-analysis published in Arthritis & Rheumatology found that acupuncture improved pain and function in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
  • Migraines and tension headaches: The Cochrane Library review found acupuncture effective for preventing and treating headaches and migraines. It often outperformed standard pain medications in reducing both frequency and severity.

2. Stress, Anxiety, and Mental Health

  • A study published in The Journal of Endocrinology found that acupuncture reduced stress hormone levels, particularly cortisol, showing its ability to help manage the body's stress response.
  • For anxiety, a meta-analysis in Complementary Therapies in Medicine (2018) found that acupuncture was associated with reduced anxiety symptoms, especially for patients undergoing medical treatments like surgery or chemotherapy.

3. Boosting Energy and Immune Function

  • Acupuncture has been shown to influence the nervous system and immune system. A study published in Neuroscience Letters (2015) demonstrated that acupuncture can trigger the release of natural painkillers like endorphins and serotonin, which improve overall vitality.
  • Research in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies found that acupuncture might modulate the immune system, enhancing the activity of natural killer cells and other immune responses.

4. Improved Sleep

  • Studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can improve sleep quality. For example, research published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews found that acupuncture helped improve insomnia by regulating melatonin production, a hormone that influences the sleep-wake cycle.

5. Digestive and Hormonal Health

  • Acupuncture has been found to positively impact digestion by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which aids in digestive functions. A study in the World Journal of Gastroenterology (2013) showed that acupuncture helped patients with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by reducing symptoms like bloating and pain.
  • Acupuncture may also assist with hormonal balance. A study in Fertility and Sterility found that acupuncture improved outcomes in women undergoing IVF (in vitro fertilization) by regulating hormone levels.

Acupuncture therapy is an ancient healing practice that originated in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points, to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. These points are located along pathways called meridians, which are believed to be channels through which vital energy, or "qi" (pronounced "chee"), flows. When this energy is disrupted or blocked, it can lead to pain, illness, or emotional imbalance. Acupuncture aims to restore the flow of qi, promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
