EMDR Therapy

Heal trauma from the roots, experience meaningful

transformation, reduce overwhelm, and move forward with greater ease.

EMDR therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach recommended by the American Psychiatric Association that can create meaningful and lasting change. It can be especially helpful when you intellectually know something to be true, but don’t yet feel it emotionally.

Rather than simply talking about what happened, EMDR helps address trauma at its roots by helping the brain process distressing experiences so they no longer feel as emotionally intense, overwhelming, or stuck.

If you find yourself reacting strongly to experiences from the past, repeating old patterns, or knowing that something is “over” while still carrying it in your mind and body, EMDR can help you process what happened and move forward with greater freedom.

In a typical EMDR session, we may explore:

- The experiences, memories, or patterns that continue to feel distressing or unresolved.

- The beliefs you developed about yourself because of those experiences

- The emotional and body responses that get activated in present-day life

- Resourcing and grounding skills to help you feel safer and more supported

- EMDR reprocessing using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or audio tones

New, more adaptive beliefs such as “I am safe now,” “I am worthy,” or “I can trust myself”

EMDR is always approached carefully and collaboratively. We move at a pace that respects your

nervous system and capacity. You do not need to force yourself to go too fast in order for healing

to happen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

It is a psychotherapy approach designed to help the brain and nervous system process experiences that feel unresolved or emotionally charged.

Sometimes difficult experiences are not fully processed at the time they happen. Instead, they can remain “stuck,” continuing to affect how you feel, think, relate, and respond in the present.

Career-related challenges can make these experiences feel more integrated and less activating.

EMDR is not simply about talking through what happened. It helps you process what is stored in your mind, body, emotions, and nervous system so that healing can happen more deeply and lastingly.

If you are curious about EMDR and wondering whether it may be a good fit for you, I’d be honoured to support you.

Many people come to EMDR because they are tired of understanding their struggles intellectually but still feeling stuck emotionally. You may know that something is in the past, yet your body continues to respond as if it is still happening.

Through EMDR, many people notice:

  • Reduced emotional intensity around painful memories
  • Less anxiety, reactivity, or overwhelm
  • More clarity and self-trust
  • Relief from shame and self-blame
  • Improved confidence and boundaries
  • Greater ability to stay present in relationships
  • A deeper sense of calm, safety, and resilience

The goal is not to erase your past. The goal is to help your past stop interfering so much with

your present.

EMDR therapy usually begins with getting to know you, your history, your goals, and your current coping resources. We first focus on building safety, stability, and a strong therapeutic foundation.

From there, we identify targets for processing and move into EMDR reprocessing when it feels

appropriate. This means treatment is tailored to you — not rushed, not one-size-fits-all.

Some people come to EMDR for a specific memory or event. Others come with more longstanding patterns rooted in complex or developmental trauma. In either case, the work is thoughtful, paced, and individualized.

This depends on your goals, history, and the nature of what you are working through. Some people seek EMDR for one specific issue, while others benefit from longer-term work for complex trauma or longstanding patterns. We can discuss a plan together based on your needs.

Not necessarily. EMDR does not require you to share every detail of a painful experience in order for healing to happen. While some talking is part of the process, EMDR often allows people to process experiences without having to repeatedly retell them at length.

No. EMDR can help with both major traumatic events and more subtle, cumulative experiences that have impacted your nervous system, relationships, or sense of self. This can include: criticism, rejection, emotional neglect, bullying, attachment wounds, or repeated stressful experiences over time.

That is completely normal. We do not begin processing before making sure there is enough preparation, trust, and stability. EMDR should feel collaborative and paced. You are not expected to dive in before you are ready.

Bilateral stimulation is a core part of EMDR and may involve eye movements, alternating taps, or alternating sounds. This helps the brain process distressing material in a different way so it becomes less emotionally charged and more fully integrated.

Yes. EMDR is often very helpful for anxiety, panic, shame, self-criticism, low self-worth, and deeply held negative beliefs such as “I’m not enough,” “I’m unsafe,” or “I have to keep everyone

happy.” These beliefs often make more sense when we understand the experiences they came from.

Yes. Many people choose EMDR after traditional talk therapy has helped them gain insight but they still feel emotionally stuck. EMDR can be especially helpful when you understand your patterns logically but continue to feel triggered, reactive, or overwhelmed.

You can add your answer here depending on your practice. For example: Yes — I offer both in-person and virtual EMDR sessions, depending on fit and clinical

appropriateness.
